Why Burn Wood?
Fires dispel the gloom of cold damp days and bring warmth and cheer into the heart of the home. The fuel of our forefathers is the renewable fuel of the future. Whether for a stove or a boiler, in one form or another, wood can be the perfect solution to our looming fossil fuel crisis.
Using wood as a fuel has a number of benefits apart from providing a warm, welcoming focal point to a room.
- Burning wood is environmentally friendly. Much of the woodland in the UK is semi-natural woodland and it benefits from being properly managed – producing greater habitat diversity as well as reducing our dependence on fossil fuels.
- Currently only 12% of our landmass forested and of this, only a small percentage is managed. Even so, the UK produced nearly 9 million green tonnes in 2009 from 2.8 million hectares.
- In the UK, we are planting more trees than we fell.
- Wood is a source of renewable, carbon neutral energy. During a tree’s lifecycle, it will absorb more CO2 than is eventually emitted either when it rots on the forest floor or is burned to produce useful heat.
- Using wood as a fuel also benefits the rural economy by providing local employment and an opportunity for diversification for farmers and other landowners.
- Wood can be used in the form of split logs, woodchip and wood pellets – providing a range of different fuels for different appliances and budgets.
- Millions of tonnes of wood products go to landfill every year and quite a lot of this wood, such as pallet wood and factory offcuts can be very easily and effectively utilised.
- Depending on the size of your house, sourcing all of your heating and hot water needs from biomass could save between 3 and 8 tonnes of CO2 being released into the atmosphere every year.
- Depending on the fuel type you opt for and how you acquire it, using wood to heat your property could also save up to 80% of your fuel bills, when compared to fossil fuels. With the introduction of the Renewable Heat Incentive in April 2011 (see our news section for more details), you could recover the cost of your investment in a biomass heating solution within 6 or 7 years and continue to receive RHI payments for a further 8 or 9 years.
- Stoves and boilers are now readily available for Smoke control urban areas.
If you don’t see yourself as the axe wielding type, then fear not, as wood pellets, woodchips or cut & split to length logs can be delivered to your door, pre-seasoned if required.
